Microchipping
Microchipping refers to the placement of a small identification chip under your pet’s skin.
This rice-sized chip contains a unique identification number that can be read with a small hand-held device at a veterinary clinic. Once the microchip is fitted, the pet should then be registered under a common directory where the owner’s contact details are also recorded. Here in Kenya, we recommend registering your pet in the East Africa Microchip Database through the East Africa Kennel Club.
A pet microchip is purely for identification and does not contain any tracking technology. However, it can be an important asset if your pet goes missing and needs to be returned to you. If your pet goes missing and is found, a veterinarian can scan the chip and look up the animal’s ID number on the microchip database. The database will hold the owner’s information that can then be used to contact you and reunite you with your loved one. Microchipping may also be required if you wish to travel with your pet internationally.
